Design Miami/ Basel and Swarovski collaborate for the fourth consecutive year to present the Designers of the Future competition. This particular honor goes to emerging designers who are full of ideas on how to develop design in a way that helps humanity go forward. The three winners were designer and robot-technologist, Frank Kolkman, Dutch-Japanese based practice, Study O Portable, and Japanese technologist, Yosuke Ushigome. Their innovative designs will be shown at Design Miami/, which will occur from 12-17 June 2018.
For this year, the theme is all about crystal explorations, the brief is ““Can crystal innovations make the way we live our lives smarter, more interactive, sustainable, immersive and accessible?” Consequently, the main challenge lies on finding ways to incorporate crystals into smart technologies, from psycho-activation techniques to touch crystal technology, and others.
“Dream Machine” is the submission of Frank Kolkman. This design synchronizes alpha and theta brainwaves with Swarovski crystals, creating an immersive light and sound experience. This projects fuses the potential of crystals with the endless prospects of neurobiology, neuropsychology, and psycho-activation techniques.
Study O Portable used the crystal technology of Swarovski to conceive color and light gradient surfaces. This project was based on the burred sense of color that can be usually found in nature. Objects like screens, tables and lighting fixtures can benefit from this astonishing surfaces.
“Can Crystals Interface Us to AI?” by Yosuke Ushigome explores crystal technology as a new way for smart home technology. In this design, the emotional quality of crystals will allow for a better human-machine communication, instead of just having a voice technology.
