Home Theater Design: The Basics

Home is where the heart is, and the heart is generally where the family, friends, and fun are. Creating an entertainment space that procures plenty of get-togethers and nights of family togetherness is an easy task with a few key designing elements.

Step 1: Know What You Want

While it might sound obvious, this step determines the eventual outlook of the entire project. Without a blueprint in mind of how the space is going to take shape and how to achieve the finished design, an entertainment room renovation will start to run into trouble. But determining your vision at the beginning will create a simple guide to follow throughout the process.

Step 2: Budget

With all of the new entertainment technology, going overboard and spending too much money can be an easy mistake. First determine what elements are necessary. Then, if your budget permits, tack on the extra features.

When estimating costs and where you want to spend, keep service providers in mind, too. Once you’ve set up the ultimate TV room, you will probably want to have a TV service to go with it. You can find more information about affordable services to help you complete your project and have channels to enjoy in your new room.

Step 3: The Room

Whichever room is designated for the entertainment space, whether it is the living/family room, basement, attic, spare room, or elsewhere, there are many common factors to incorporate in terms of design.

First of all, try to place the television and main speakers along a short wall for optimal sound projection.

Next, treat any windows in the room. If natural light creates a glare off the television, then daytime viewing will be tricky. But this is an easy fix with black out curtains to create a theater atmosphere.

While hardwood floor is vogue, in an entertainment room, consider wall to wall carpet or a large, fluffy rug. Carpet helps the sound acoustics while providing plenty of comfortable space for kids and adults to sprawl out on.

Lastly, for wall colors, stay away from semi-gloss or high-gloss paint. The paint surface will reflect the on-screen action and can be distracting. Sticking with flat paint or eggshell paint will cancel any reflection.

Step 4: The Sound

Because of the advancement in speaker technology, the good news is that almost any speaker system will provide high quality, top-of-the-line sound. However, speakers labeled “bipole” or “dipole” cannot produce sound effects the way they were intended. For example, movie soundtracks are designed to provide specific sounds from specific speaker areas. The sound of a speeding train is supposed to move through the speakers from one side to the other. “Bipole” and “Dipole” speakers are incompatible with this kind of sound feature.

There are 5.1, 7.1, and 9.1 surround sound speakers, meaning either 5, 7, or 9 full-range speakers with 1 low-range speaker. Most home theaters have 5.1 or 7.1, but for the sound enthusiasts, 9.1 offers inexplicable sound quality.

Step 5: The Screen

Perhaps the most important tip for setting up your home theater, the position of the television screen is crucial. Experts place the screen angle between 30 to 40 degrees. To achieve this, draw a triangle from the edges of the television to your nose when you are seated in the front row. The angle that points at your head, also called the apex, should be 30 to 40 degrees. This allows the viewer to see all the action comfortably.

With these few basic elements, a home entertainment space is only a weekend’s worth of work away. You can have yours ready in time to enjoy the rest of the winter Olympics.

  • Glass Balustrades Brisbane

Like you mentioned, glass fencing is definitely more sophisticated looking and goes well with today’s modern trends. The glass also doesn’t obstruct light from coming into any area. It makes any room look more spacious with its translucent characteristics. Great article on embracing natural light in the home!
