Nikari: “12 Designs For Nature”

During last year, the finnish brand Nikari manufactured a series of 12 furniture pieces (one per month). Each piece of this collection was designed by a different designer and all pieces are inspired in nature. Its aim is to help protect finnish forests and show that beautiful and quality furniture can be made with sustainability.

”WWF Finland and NIKARI co-operation is a brilliant example of how a contemporary design company can represent sustainable thinking in the modern world. We at WWF Finland are happy to be part of Nikari PROJECT 2012 DESIGNS FOR NATURE and together with great designers pay attention to the important issue of protecting forests globally.” Anneli Alfthan

“There are great tree species growing in the Finnish forests.
They are all more than suitable for research and design product material.
For instance, the common idea of Finnish pine has been a bit incorrect, probably because of the qualities of mass produced furniture or furnishings made of it. By sourcing the logs carefully one can find very noble pine wood to be used beautifully in the furniture.”

March – Designed by Martí Guixé

Nikari 12 Designs For Nature march Martí Guixé Nikari: "12 Designs For Nature" Nikari 12 Designs For Nature march Mart Guix

“The MARCH wall bench is a wooden bench that has to lean on a wall to be able to function. This new typology originates from a certain misuse of a ladder: people using one of its steps as a seat. The perception of the MARCH wall bench as a kind of wrong wooden ladder enriches the object by giving it a multi-context; it becomes an extension of the wall, it creates a domesticated area around and a fictive memory, based on the unconscious recognition of the nostalgic and iconic image of the wooden ladder.”

“The idea behind the APRIL table family was to create a contrast
between the massive socket and the suspended thin table surface. At the same time the skillful craftsmanship can be seen at its best. Different sizes and typologies enable endless possibilities of use.”

Alfredo Häberli

“The material, function and construction are the key elements guiding my work. One usually becomes more important than the others, depending on the project at hand. This combination doesn’t leave very much space for visuality, but whenever there is a chance for it, it will be taken.”

“2012 DESIGNS FOR NATURE project made me think about
the importance of our forests and the global climate change problematics. Not everyone has the opportunity to turn on the light when it gets dark. I wanted to create a solution with materials and technology representing minimal usage of natural resources. The product should also be easy to maintain and timeless. JUNE chandelier is a new version of one of the earliest forms of lighting.”

July – Designed by Nao Tamura

“July is a wooden stool inspired by the intrinsic beauty
of imperfection. Like a bundle of wooden logs, three individual
“slices” — unequal in size, variegated in grain and color, and uneven surface angles — unite to create a beautiful, singular form. Each stool enjoys its own sense of individuality. Together, in multiples, they create a sculptural seating display for gathering spaces.”

Materials: elm, oak
Surface finish: natural oil mixture

August – Designed by Aamu Song & Johan Olin

“AUGUST stool, ’Rudi-Kari’, follows the inventions of the Nikari masters, carpenters Rudi Merz and Kari Virtanen. It stands on Rudi’s legs and carries Kari’s head. The firm connection between the legs and the seat is made using parts of tree where a branch has grown – the strongest part of the tree – an innovation Rudi has previously used in coat hangers. The seat of the stool is shaped as sharp as Mr. Virtanen always is.”

a drink sitting on the SEPTEMBER bar stool and
thinking about it..?”

Like you mentioned, glass fencing is definitely more sophisticated looking and goes well with today’s modern trends. The glass also doesn’t obstruct light from coming into any area. It makes any room look more spacious with its translucent characteristics. Great article on embracing natural light in the home!
