Quite recently, the prominent American architect and designer as well as founder of the Rockwell Group, David Rockwell added a few new innovative and handmade designs to the unique rug collection that he designed for the renowned contemporary rug brand, The Rug Company, who uses time-honoring techniques and the finest materials to ensure the best quality rugs in the world. These new designs are based on graphic and textural explorations. Rockwell managed to create designs that are not only sophisticated but also playful.
The skilled designer is considered as one of the most brilliant minds in the industry. His eccentric and dramatic style is highly praised among the community, because he uses bold desgin narratives to entertain, inspire and instill knowledge. Now, Design Build Ideas will talk a bit more about these new additions to the incredibly handcrafted collection that are quite reflective of the passion and sense of togetherness that is shared by both parties.
This mesmerizing rug has quite the story behind his design. Its inspiration was based on the glazed ceramic vessels that both Rockwell and his daughter, Lola used to decorate Pascale Girardin’s – a specialized ceramic artist – studio, in Montreal. Girardin had previosuly worked with Rockwell for the Nobu Downtown restaurant in Manhattan.
The fun part is that the composition of this rug expresses the same unplanned movements and flow of brushstrokes as the ones appearing on the glassy vessels.
Adapted from the original Tidal rug, this new version has woven from bamboo silk and highlights cool and warm tones of grey, which give a lively expression of natural light and a shimmering reflection across the surface of a bay.
Featuring a strong indigo blue shade, the Misty Rug represents an interaction between design and craft. The style of this rug is heavily influence by Rockwell’s passion for nature. Bamboo silk was also used to depict the indigo blue ombré motif that fades to white as we approach the edges.
“My rugs display modern, abstracted patterns of their respective square and oval shapes, with varying pile heights for a richer, more dynamic texture.” – David Rockwell
