Ice as an Architectural Material

In Sweden you can find the Ice Hotel, an hotel which works every year, from December to April, and is made in Ice. It is located in the village of Jukkasjärvi, about 17 km from Kiruna, Sweden, and was the first ice hotel.

It is dependent upon constant sub-freezing temperatures during construction and operation. For the walls, fixtures, and fittings the materials are entirely ice or compacted snow, and are held together using a substance known as snice, which takes the place of mortar in a traditional brick-built hotel.

The entire structure is made out of ice blocks (more than 30,000 tons) taken from the Torne River. The architecture is very detailed and it creates a very peaceful environment. Each year,  the hotel is reconstructed , which makes the visit unique and an unforgettable experience.
