It’s been over 25 years since David Zwirner, son of a famous German dealer, opened his first gallery all the way back in in 1993 in 43 Greene Street in SoHo, New York. Since the 90s he has risen to become one of the most prominent dealers in the world. Today Design Build Ideas will be taking a look at the career of a man that has been compared to figures such as Larry Gagosian since he opened his gallery.

David Zwirner (born in 1964) is a German art dealer who currently owns the David Zwirner Gallery that still exists in New York City and which opened another space in London in 2012. Since the creation of the New York space, it has since become the centre stage for over 300 exhibitions. David Zwirner himself has been an active figure in both the promotion of art and taking an initiative to help charity groups. One of his most notable actions, when it came to solidarity, was when he teamed up with Ben Stiller in the raising of funds to organize the art auction Artists For Haiti with the purpose to rais funds to help children of that very same country.

Ever since the first gallery opened in 1993, aside from London, two more have opened in NY and another one opened in Hong Kong. Zwirner has also been known for being a person who seeks to help many artists and smaller art galleries with distinct backgrounds and cultures to have a space to exhibit their work. His gallery is a recurring presence in many events such as Art Basel, Jingart, Frieze, Expo Chicago and many other art events spread worldwide. Many artists have had the chance of exhibiting within this art gallery, among them Doug Wheeler, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Marlene Dumas,  Neo Rauch, and many more.

Another relevant part of the business for the German Dealer is the creation of David Zwirmer Books the stand-alone publishing house of David Zwirner in 2014. Within this group, you can find catalogues, monographs, historical surveys, artist books, and catalogues that are related to many of the artwork that has passed through the NY art gallery.
